Yes, it's the routine procedure to initiate a vigilance inquiry when there's a written and specific complaint against a employee. The Narcotics Control Bureau’s vigilance unit head DDG NR Gyaneshwar Singh has started an inquiry into the allegations of ‘extortion’ made by an independent witness within the Mumbai cruise drugs case by way of an affidavit. The vigilance head will record the statements of Sameer Wankhede involved. He will analyse the evidence submitted by the witness, Prabhakar Sail, and later submit a report and submit it to the NCB DG, Mr Pradhan.
Career & Achievment:- A 2008 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, 40-year-old Sameer Wankhede is that the son of retired Maharashtra lawman, Dayandev Wankhede. Sameer served as deputy commissioner of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and extra SP of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before his stint with the NCB. He later joined because the assistant commissioner of Customs and was posted at Mumbai Airport.
During his stint at Mumbai Air Intelligence Unit, he nabbed several celebrities who were evading duty and trying to withstand the green channel without declaring goods.
When Wankhede was transferred to the Maharashtra Service Tax department in 2010, he booked 2,500 people, including 200 celebrities, for evading tax. He also added revenue of Rs 87 crore in two years to the exchequer, a record in Mumbai. In 2011, when serving within the Customs department, Sameer Wankhede ensured that even the Cricket World Cup trophy was released at the Mumbai airport only after customs was paid. The trophy was made from gold.
In 2013, he caught singer Mika Singh at the Mumbai airport with foreign currency. The officer has also raided properties owned by many Bollywood stars, including Anurag Kashyap, Vivek Oberoi and Ram Gopal Varma.
He was then promoted to the post of deputy commissioner of Customs and within the same capacity served in Mumbai, state, and Delhi. He then served as a further SP on deputation with NIA between 2014 and 2016 and was awarded the ‘Excellence in Service’ medal by the DG of NIA. During his stint with NIA, he handled several high-profile terrorism cases, including the case associated with Kalyan boys joining ISIS.
After his return to the house cadre, Wankhede was posted as joint director at the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) between 2017 and 2020. During his stint with the DRI, he busted one in all the largest gold-smuggling cases, wherein 180 kilograms of gold was smuggled to Mumbai.
In August 2020, he was loaned out for 6 months to the NCB that was looking to probe the Sushant Singh Rajput Drug case. seizing the case, he arrested over 33 people within the case and charge-sheeted them. There are several raids by NCB across Mumbai and Goa since he took over. He was awarded the ‘Home Minister’s Medal’ for excellence in add 2021.
