The last Cheetah in India perished in 1947 in state MP eastern part (now Chhattisgarh). Formally, the extinction of Cheetah was declared in 1952.
Many decades later, in 2009, the plan to revive Cheetah in India started under environment minister Jairam Ramesh but the real progress started only after 2020 go-ahead by Supreme Court. The initial plan was to get rare Asian Cheetah from Iran but that didn’t work out due to political reasons. Subsequently, African Cheetah was considered. After more than a decade of efforts, many missed deadlines, African Cheetah landed in India in September 2022 and introduced in Kuno wildlife reserve under supervision.
PM Modi chose his birthday to inaugurate Cheetah introduction. Modi will definitely hype the event and take credit for this wildlife heritage restoration with slogans like ‘Modi hai toh mumkin hai’.
