Earlier this week, Netflix announced a new feature that got me wondering about all the OTT platforms I subscribe to—at least five. Allow me to explain. The new tool makes it easy for people sharing an account to transfer an existing profile—including recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings, saved games, and more—to a new account. But this feature, more than being a convenience, seems to be part of the streaming giant’s push to kick out freeloaders. Look, I am no freeloader. Probably, my issue with OTT platforms goes deeper. I subscribed to most of them in 2018. Since then, I have watched nearly everything their algorithms threw at me—including at least two reruns each of popular American sitcoms FRIENDS, The Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, and Two and a Half Men. Nowadays, I often find myself scrolling through these platforms and wondering how this content tsunami is slowly taking over our lives, to an extent that there’s hardly anything else people talk about or do. The time I spend reading, in particular, has been the biggest victim of the “did-you-watch-the-latest-show?” phenomenon. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that it might be time for me to go back to pre-OTT days.
