As a student & in my early career I slept less than 5 hours. I was sleep deprived most of the time.
When I became a father I slept 4-5 hours because my son woke up every 2 hours. I was sleepy during the day.
By my mid career I was sleeping 7-8 hours. I was oversleeping.
In my first few years as an entrepreneur I slept 4-5 hours. I was overworked. Slowly I increased my sleep to 5-6 hours.
I realised that deep sleep of 5 hours is good enough but most of the time when I was worried I was unable to get deep sleep. Which is why we probably need more sleep.
As per earlier research 7-8 hours of sleep was considered ideal for good health.
As per the latest research those who sleep less than 6 hours or more than 7 hours are more prone to heart diseases. So 6-7 hours of sleep are considered ideal.
The simplest way to find out if you are getting good sleep is when you get dreams. Dreams come in deep sleep or REM sleep.
I get dreams when I am sleeping between 5-6 hours of deep sleep.
