WFH did not work well in India & most companies are back to WFO (Work from Office).
So why did it fail?
There could be 4 reasons:
1. Employees misused it through moonlighting or not working well enough when no one was watching.
2. Trust was missing from the manager's side. This made them doubt the employees which led to a breakdown of trust. The micro managers/leaders struggled.
3. Employee performance dropped after moving to WFH. This happened because it was tough to manage work & home because boundaries vanished. Also the emotional connect was lost. Moreover, employees were used to being told what to do all the time now they found it difficult to deliver on their own.
4. Leaders and managers were not capable, they did not have the skills to manage teams virtually. They were unable to build a high performing culture virtually.
All of these are valid reasons but the real reason is the managers and leaders. That is where the authority & responsibility lies. If the system failed they are to be blamed.
India lacks good managers and leaders and WFH only exposed their weaknesses even more. The strange part is that most managers and leaders said WFH will not work but they did not try to understand why they failed.
