The Man Who Redefined the Art of Commentary
Harsha Bhogle is a man whose voice most cricket fans can identify over the years. For last 3 decades, he has brought life to a breed of non playing commentators. He certainly ranks up there with the likes of Richie Benaud and Tony Greig.
Harsha Bhogle has never played cricket (except school / university team) but is a keen observer and analyst. He is one of the most loved cricket commentators who travel all over the globe and ensure to entertain people with their witty comments.
His keen eye for details and precise analytical skills combined with a dash of humour and wits make him a very admirable commentator. He has covered over 100 Test matches and 400 ODIs.
Harsha Bhogle was born on July 19, 1961 in Hyderabad. He belongs to a Marathi speaking family. His father A. D. Bhogle was a professor of French, and mother Shalini Bhogle was a professor of psychology. He attended Hyderabad Public School and subsequently finished Chemical Engineering at Osmania University in Hyderabad. And he completed his PG diploma from IIM Ahmedabad.
He was 19 when he walked to the station director at All India Radio in Hyderabad at the insistence of his father with an audio recording of his commentary that he had done for his college match.
He got his first stint as a commentator in 1981 for a Ranji Trophy match, followed by his first ODI in 1983 and his first Test in 1984.
He became the first Indian commentator to be invited by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation during India's cricket series before the 1992 World Cup.
He has published and authored a number of books, including a biography of Mohammad Azharuddin. He and his wife Anita Bhogle have written a book titled ‘The Winning Way’ based on business knowledge drawn from the sporting world.
