Born into a family of farmers, he grew up to secure a master’s degree in physics from Gorakhpur University — even acquiring first division results. Before becoming a politician, he was a lecturer of physics at the KB Post Graduate College, Mirzapur.
He has been a part of the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since the age of 13 serving in various capacities before becoming the general secretary of the organization in Mirzapur in 1972. And two years later he became the secretary of the Bhartiya Jana Sangh’s Mirzapur unit — the political wing of the RSS.
During emergency he was arrested in 1975 and remained in detention for two years. After release from detention, he fought and won Uttar Pradesh state legislature election. It was his first run for public office.
With merger of Bhartiya Jana Sangh into Bhartiya Janata Party in 1980, he rose through the ranks of the party from being the state president of the youth wing in 1984 to becoming the national general secretary in 1986 and finally being the national president of Youth Wing in 1988. In 1991, when BJP formed government in UP, he became Education Minister. And served as Chief Minister of UP from 2000 to 2002.
In 2005, he was appointed the President of the BJP with the aim of bringing the party more in line with Nationalism along with development. In 2013, he became party president again and later joined Modi cabinet in 2014.
