Good Morning Dear MMS Reader,
If you have a pet, you will probably relate to what I'm about to say. If you don't, here's a unique problem Indian pet parents face. Good vets are always found in tiny, crowded clinics with almost no booking slots and no 24x7 emergency service. Inversely, swanky new vet clinics offer round-the-clock attendance, but you may walk out having burned a hole in your pocket. At the very least.
So what's the solution? Pratapsinh Gaekwad might have one.
Gaekwad, a member of the former royal family of Baroda, founded Crown Vet in 2016 after his then-five-year-old dog, Chevvy, needed post-surgery care. “Wrapped in a bedsheet, the doctors transferred him straight out of the operation theatre into my car. His sutures were still fresh. There was no one we could reach out to in the night if something went wrong,” Gaekwad said.
It takes a pet parent to build infrastructure for pet care, infrastructure that's painfully missing in most Indian cities even today. Crown Vet—now in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune—is in high-growth mode since the pandemic. According to Gaekwad, revenue grew 32% for the year ended March 2021; the company saw Rs 7.4 crore (~$1 million) in revenue that year. Its projected revenue for the year ending March 2022 is nearly double that—Rs 14 crore.
And now, it wants to build 50 24x7 emergency hospitals in the next five to six years. The pandemic helped Crown Vet as more people adopted pets while working from home. Also, smaller clinics didn't have the resources and infrastructure to follow strict Covid protocols, something that comes a lot easier to a large 24x7 hospital chain.
India needs emergency vet hospitals like Crown Vet. Most vets send pet parents to different facilities for different tests as a single centre often doesn't have all medical equipment. Pet parents thus often find themselves running pillar to post in the middle of a medical emergency.
So Crown Vet's premise, despite higher prices, would come as a blessing. The one true challenge, though? It needs the talent to keep the pet parents coming back. Crown Vet is attempting to invest in smaller but experienced vet clinics and have their vets come on board. Are they keen? What could sweeten the deal? Hope you've had a nice weekend and Eid Holidays! #yusufbhandarkar www.multimediastudio.net
