Private hospitals in India are even costlier than the most expensive 7 star hotels.
An ICU in a good private hospital costs Rs 75,000- 100,000 a day in Delhi NCR.
This may go up a few times if there is a surgery involved.
India's best hotel probably costs Rs 50,000 a night.
The cost of health insurance costs Rs 25,000 for a family of 3 for around Rs 5 million cover.
One week in a good hospital can cost you Rs 700,000-20,00,000. It is a no brainer to buy a health insurance. Even if you go to a hospital once in a lifetime it makes sense.
This cost includes medicines, tests, doctor fees, surgery, procedures, ICU usage, ventilator, etc.
The interesting part is the room charges are only Rs 10-15,000 per day but the add on expenses are at least 10 times more.
This is based on my experience of visiting private hospitals in the last 3 months for both myself & my family members. I went through both situations of being covered 100% by health insurance & not being covered at all.
Please buy a health insurance cover as soon as possible.
P.S: I hope no one has to visit a hospital ever but if you do then having a health insurance can save your lifetime savings.
