I changed roles 10 times within the organisations I was working in my career. Most times I volunteered, many times I took initiatives, also applied to formal role changes, sometimes the organisation gave me a role change.
The exposure & learning that one gets through role changes within your current organisation is several times more than changing a job.
Also those who make role changes are on a fast track in the organisation. It is a clear signal from the organisation that they value the skills/work that the employee has. Sometimes it may be driven out of business need.
But role changes happen mostly because of the employee, you have to be prepared to make that extra effort to make it happen.
